Privacy Policy
Last Updated: 29th October 2026
Applies to the Octane iPhone/iPad app, saved-station widgets and this support website.
The Short Version
No Octane account, advertising SDK or developer-operated usage analytics backend. Saved places, preferences and vehicle settings are held on your device. Maps, station feeds, image hosts, website hosting and messages you send still involve personal-data processing, as explained below.
Who Is Responsible?
Octane is developed by K Boardman, the controller for personal information received for Octane support, beta feedback and operation of this website. For questions or requests, email keeeaaan@protonmail.com. Apple and other services may also process information independently under their own privacy notices.
What Stays on Your Device?
Octane stores preferences, manually entered vehicle and consumption settings, Home/Work places, favourites, station nicknames, recent searches and saved journeys locally. Downloaded station and tariff feeds are cached locally. These are not uploaded to an Octane account or developer database.
The app and its widget share a small local snapshot of up to three selected stations, their display names, price summaries, update/expiry times and fee indicators. It contains no device location, Home/Work addresses, credentials or route history. Widgets make no independent location or network requests.
Location, Search and Routes
With your permission, Octane uses foreground location to show nearby places and support driving and route guidance. Explicit Current Location actions request a recent fix. Drive/navigation uses continuous location while active; those updates stop when you leave/end the session or the app goes into the background. Octane does not keep a developer-accessible GPS history.
Apple’s MapKit services receive information necessary for maps, place searches and routes. This can include the visible map area, search terms, selected endpoints and stops, departure times and authorised current location. Local fuel comparisons send the selected forecourts’ coordinates to Apple for outbound and return routes; fill amounts and fuel-economy settings are calculated locally. Parking, coffee and food searches use the selected map area.
You can refuse or revoke location access in iOS Settings and still search manually. Permission is optional, but location-dependent features will then be unavailable. Apple explains its own processing in Apple Maps & Privacy.
Station Feeds and Images
Octane requests fuel/charging feeds directly from the listed providers and may load network-published station images or logos. Their servers receive normal request information such as your IP address and device/network request metadata. These requests do not include your Octane favourites, Home/Work list, entered battery settings or fill amount. The provider’s privacy notice governs its independent server processing.
The distributed Release build has no configured road-limit data endpoint and does not send location to a public Overpass server. Private development builds may offer a separately disclosed, opt-in road-data preview; it is not enabled in the public beta described here.
External Apps
If you choose directions in Apple Maps or Waze, Octane shares the selected destination and relevant routing options with that app. Opening Spotify opens its app or website; Octane has no Spotify login, playback-history access or music-tracking integration. Each service’s own terms and privacy notice apply after you leave Octane.
Support and TestFlight
If you email us, we receive your email address, message and attachments you choose to send. We use these to respond, investigate faults and improve reliability. Please avoid sending unnecessary personal information or precise journey traces.
Apple operates TestFlight. If you join by email, we can see your tester email and information Apple makes available, such as installations, sessions, crashes and feedback. Public-link testers may appear anonymous, although feedback can contain identifying information. Apple may supply diagnostic reports under its beta-testing and device privacy settings. We do not add a separate analytics SDK to Octane. See TestFlight & Privacy and Apple’s Privacy Policy.
This Website
The production website is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. A public staging copy is hosted through OpenAI Sites and Cloudflare. Neither copy includes advertising, analytics scripts, an account system or a contact form. Fonts, scripts and artwork are served with the site. We do not set tracking cookies or use browser storage in the website’s code.
Hosting providers receive ordinary connection information, including IP address, requested path, browser information and timing, to deliver and secure the website. Infrastructure logging and security-cookie practices are controlled by those providers, not by a tracking script added by Octane. Their processing is described in OpenAI’s Privacy Policy and Cloudflare’s Privacy Policy.
The Web Fuel Map
The web map downloads a public Fuel Finder station snapshot from this website. Searching and filtering that snapshot happens in your browser; search text is not sent to an Octane search service. We do not save your searches, selected stations or map position in browser storage.
Loading and moving the map requests map tiles directly from the OpenStreetMap Foundation. It receives ordinary connection information, including your IP address, browser information, the site’s referring origin and the geographic map tiles requested. These tiles reveal the area you are viewing. See the OpenStreetMap Foundation Privacy Policy. No map requests are made on the homepage.
If you choose Use My Location, your browser asks for permission. A single location request centres the map; we do not continuously track it or send it to an Octane backend. Viewing maps around that point requests the corresponding area’s map tiles. You can deny permission and search the station catalogue manually. Revoke permission through your browser settings.
Open Directions sends the chosen station’s coordinates to Apple Maps. Apple handles any further route or current-location request under its own notice. The website does not calculate routes. Share copies a station link to your clipboard only when you select it; it does not post the link for you.
Why We Process Information
We rely on our legitimate interests in answering support requests, finding and fixing faults, operating a secure website and running a voluntary beta. We limit what we receive and do not use it for behavioural advertising. If we must retain information to comply with a legal obligation, that obligation is the basis for that retention. Location access is controlled by your iOS permission; independent service providers explain their own legal bases.
There is no requirement to provide personal information to create an Octane account, because no account exists. Support contact details are only needed if you want a reply. Octane does not sell personal information, build advertising profiles or make solely automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects.
Retention and Deletion
Local settings and saved items remain until you change/remove them or remove the app’s data. iOS controls device backups and widget storage. Feed caches are refreshed or replaced during use; a displayed price’s expiry is not a promise that every cached file is deleted at that moment.
We keep support correspondence and beta issue records only for as long as needed to resolve the request, investigate related reliability issues and meet legal obligations. We review whether identifying information is still needed when an issue closes and remove or anonymise it when it is no longer needed. You may request earlier deletion. Apple controls TestFlight diagnostic availability and retention, and hosting/email providers operate their own retention policies.
Providers and International Processing
Information may be handled by Apple, our website-hosting providers, our email provider Proton and the station/image services used by the app. These providers can operate internationally, including outside the UK and EEA. Their privacy notices describe locations and transfer safeguards. Contact us for information about transfers relating to support or feedback that we control. We do not claim that all processing or storage stays in the UK.
Your Choices and Rights
- Manage or revoke location permission through iOS Settings.
- Remove favourites, saved places and recent searches using Octane’s controls. Uninstall the app to remove its app-local data; manage backups separately in iOS.
- Request access, correction, deletion or restriction of personal information we hold, and portability where applicable.
- You can object to processing based on our legitimate interests. Email us with your request. Rights can depend on the processing and any legal retention requirements.
- Manage TestFlight participation and device diagnostic sharing through Apple’s controls.
We aim to respond to rights requests within one month, subject to applicable extensions. We may ask for the information necessary to verify the request. You can complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office or your local data-protection authority.
Changes to This Policy
We will update this page when Octane’s data practices change and revise the date above. Material changes will be explained through an appropriate app, beta or website notice. Questions are welcome at keeeaaan@protonmail.com.
